    Hi,

Having had vista for 2 months now all has been well with connecting to my university's network.

However, last week, after unplugging the network cable and then reinserting it my computer only reads the network as an unidentified network.

I have ran the diagnostic tools for network problems.

The same LAN cable allows perfect internet acces on my laptop.

I have tried disabling IvP6 with no luck,

I have tried the send the computer to sleep and wake back up again with no luck either.

The network doesnt work when set to either Private or Public.

My laptop is running XP professional

Please help, I could really do with the internet for my desktop especially during the exam season at uni!

    Regards,

    Mark

I want to add myself to this issue. I just got a Dell XPS and my wireless is doing the same thing. I've tried just about everything in the forum to fix the "unidentified network" Local access only issue when attempting to connect via wireless. Nothing has worked to this point. I get connected with it plugged into the Linksys BEFW11s4 V.2 router.

    Hello,

I'm having same issue. "Unidentified Network - Local Access Only".

I do have Windows Vista Home Premium and a Linksys WRT54G v2.2 (Firmware 4.21.1) wireless router. No success.

And the best part is, while posting in this forum, I'm connected to an unsecure wireless router of my building, using the same laptop and hardware devices with Windows Vista Home Premium.

    Something weird with Linksys routers?

    Hello again,

I've been surfing the web and I have to add that there are known issues at Microsoft.

It might help you following links:

    Good luck

I've also had the same issue with the unidentified network "local access" only. I'm running Vista Home Premium on a Sony VAIO C series, with a Belkin Wireless Pre-N F5D8230-4 router (Firmware V 1.01.03), so I don't think it's anything to do with Linksys routers. My XP notebook computers run beautifully on this wireless network.

Anyway, when I first connected my Vista machine to my network, it detected the router and all settings okay, and connected okay, but after being connected for awhile (like several hours), it would just "drop" the connection from "Local and Internet" to "Local Only." I never did figure that out, but as long as I disconnected and re-connected to my network, it worked fine; just a little annoying.

Here's where my story gets strange: yesterday, my 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security on the new Vista machine ran out. I uninstalled it so that I could install my Computer Associates Internet Security Suite 2007(newly updated for Vista), for which I already have a license and have used successfully for years. It installed perfectly, but since installing CA ISS, I now cannot connect to my wireless network with the Vista machine. It can see the network, but it can't apparently connect, and this aspect of Vista is so "user un-friendly" that I can't figure out why. At first, I thought it was a firewall issue, so I disabled the firewall, etc. etc., with no success. I have a couple of other, more drastic tactics to try, but I thought first I'd check out the Vista forum to see if anyone besides me has had this problem. Maybe CA's Vista upgrade isn't REALLY Vista-ready.

I saw the links posted by Reckon, so I'm going to try those solutions, to see if that resolves my problem.

    Thanks for the help!

    Hello

To Fix This Disable all File Sharing,Printer Sharing, etc. On Both The Wireless Connection And The Wired Connection. Reboot..Then Try to connect to the wireless.. That should work.

Well, I think in my case, the problem was being caused by my security software. I don't think CA's "Vista-ready" Internet Security Suite 2007 is really Vista-ready, at least with a home wireless connection. I've uninstalled the software, and am now able to connect to my wireless network just fine. And, just for the record, CA ISS 2007 is not very user-friendly either, because I couldn't figure out how to change my settings, AND their tech support has really gone downhill. I'm going to stick with Norton Internet Security for my Vista machine, because my wireless connection worked just fine with it, so I know it works.

    Thanks again.

I'm seeing the same issue as the original poster, and have a few more details. I tried the solution given by Mustang 76, and it has not solved the issue. Even though the KB links didn't really apply to my problem i tried them too.

I am getting the same symptoms regardless of how i try to connect to the network. I have tried via my wireless router, through a local lan (throught the same router), directly through my cable modem bypassing the router, via my Spring EVDO express card, and finally even through the LAN at my office. All of these conenctions were verified to work with other machines.

Because I know exactly when it last worked, I checked the 20 minutes between whne i last saw it working, and strangely there were no application updates that I knew about.

    Here are some additional detail:

--There are outgoing packets, presumably to the DHCP server and Internet Gateway, but no incoming packets being recieved.

--The Task Scheduler has a critical error when it tries to initialize RCP, however, this may be a symptom rather than the cause of the problem- It is actually a Task Scheduler critical error 404. It reads: Task Scheduler service has encountered RCP initialization error in "RcpServerUseProtseq:ncacn_ip_tcp". Additional Data: Error Value: 1703.

--Running Vista Home Premium on a Dell XPS: Inspiron M1750.. was in my office and using my sprint card for network access outside of my firewall. I had a meeting and I closed my firewall putting my machine to sleep, when I opened it and resume from sleep I attempted to reconnect to the sprint network, and it failed. i then attempted via Wi-fi and it failed, and then went back and tried wired LAN and it also failed.

--Disabled McAfee firewall, then completely uninstalled Mcafee with no effect, windows firewall has been disabled as well.

    --Virus/spyware scans show no malware.

--I have rebooted about 100000000 times.

--Used system restore to the morning prior to losing connectivity with no effect

I am actually relieved to see other people have had these symptoms, as i was thinking my next step was to back up all my data and do a full system recovery. However, I definately don't want to do that now, as the problem could just come back, and i just got my machine how i like it.

Any ideas, anthing? silicon, have you figured this out yet?

Just a little more information as I continue to investigate.

If I use a static IP address into my wireless router, I can see my home network, but still not the internet. Prior to this, it just comes up as "unidetified network" I also get some packets received at that point..

I had the same problem, and discarded the external causes: It had to be Vista! So I checked everything, and analyzing the ouptut of the IPCONFIG command I observed that the gateway address had a double number: 0.0.0.0 and the IP of my router.

To verify the routing to this address, I disconnected all cables and deactivated the wireless card, and consulted the routing table using the command:

    ROUTE PRINT

and it showed a spurious entry of 0.0.0.0. I deleted it using:

    ROUTE DELETE 0.0.0.0

so it didn't appear anymore in the route print output. Then I reconnected cables and waited for the DHCP data to be refreshed. After that,

I tried again to access internet sites.

    Voila! It worked!

It seems that some autoconfiguration on entering some network inserted the routing rule and failed to delete it after abandoning the connection. There must be only one 0.0.0.0 entry in the routing table when there is an active connection.

I hope this could be of some use.

    Regards,

    Fjor

I had the same "unidentified network-local access only" problem after removing Norton Anti-virus. The issue turned out to be that the regular Windows unistall doesn't fully get rid of it. You need to run Norton's own removal utility:
