On XP, it works.
On Vista, it tells "system does not support fulscreen/resolution mode" ..
I tried different modes but it changed nothing.
Vista = ...

ok....so I def. know this will work...I've done it myself....so here goes....|You need a DOS emulator...and I'm not going to say "such as this", I'm going to say "use this". Use Dosbox.http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1 is the link...(this may not actually be clickable but just copy and paste it into your browser...and download the Win 32 WIndows installer package....pssst....it's the first one.) Anywho....back to the subject at hand....once you download that....install it and open it up....Now depending on the game you are trying to play depends on how you do this....so I'll give you both ways and you can try both and see which one works...one should be tried before the other one though...so here's the first way....If you haven't done this already....install the game into any directory just making sure the Folder name is less than 8 characters long (DOS doesn't work with any longer names) Once that is done open DOSbox and you will see Z:\
the way DOSbox works is that you first "mount" a drive and then run the programs from there...so first you need to mount your drive.....so type this....without the quotes.."mount C ("C" being whatever drive you installed the program on) "C:\(and now the specific directory where the game is installed hopefully something easy like C:\Warcraft) you should see something to the effect of Z:\mount C C:\Warcraft
hit enter................it should then say Drive C is mounted as local directory C:\Warcraft\.......ok first step is done.............now.........next step..........you now see "Z:\" again.....type "C:" you should see "Z:\C:" hit enter....now you should see "C:\" now type the name of the Warcraft Executable. for instance "warcraft.exe"......so you should see "C:\warcraft"...........hit enter......it should run the game.....if you get a strange message saying your CD is not in the drive proceed to the second way of doing this.....if not.....well then just keep reading straight on.....next step: the way DOSbox works is at a standard window size and FPS rate....if the game starts up and you want it to be full screen..just hit ALT-Enter to get fullscreen....and if the game seems choppy or slow...just up the FPS to your desired level by pressing ctr-F12 until the game speeds up to your desired speed....when you want to exit the game.....exit it like normal and then type "exit" into DOSbox....sweet! Now if your game didn't work that way........follow me here............
1) copy entire contents of Warcraft II CD to a directory (ex. d:\warcraft). Keep the directory name to 8 letters or less.
(2) run DOSBox
(3) mount c c:\warcraft (or wherever you put the game on your hard drive)
(4) c:
(5) subst p: c: (you can use a letter other than P: as long as it's free on your system)
(6) p:
(7) cd warcraft II
(8) press ctrl-F12 until it runs smoothly
so....ok..........lots of instructions....if this turns out that it doesn't work for some odd reason or you get lost or have questions....just email me...I can get it to work....just give me the specifics and I'll work on it for ya....Warcraft II was the best Warcraft game and I'd hate for you to have to miss out on it because of Vista.....so yeah have fun.

Yes I know DosBox and I already tested before you answered but thanks anyways for your reply ^^
The problem is that it crashed in another way with DosBox.. but another time I tested on another OS (where the same crash occured too), it worked, maybe it will work again on Vista too..
But anyways, we see a loss of compatibility of each Windows...
Windows XP made some DOS programs not working.
Vista makes even more DOS programs not working !
The best would be if Microsoft could solve these problems...

In reply to an email I recieved.....If you have Windows Xp the game should work without a DOS emulator. You should just be able to install the game by itself normally. If this does not work try using the compatibility mode. To do this....right click on the application once installed...something to the effect of "Warcraft II.exe" and go down to "Properties on the dropdown menu. Click the Compatibility tab and go a 1\4 of the way down and click "Use Compatibility" and choose "Windows 95" if this doesn't work try "Windows 98" if that doesn't work try another. (I don't have Xp at the moment so I can't test this right now....sorry
) DOSbox was meant to emulate DOS...XP can already do that. You can probably still use DOSbox in XP and it work and to do that you should try the second method described above. If you have Warcraft II....the original one....this one runs from DOS only....if you have Warcraft II Battle Net. Edition....this works straight from the OS and should work fine with a compatibility mode set on it. If none of this works for you....email me with more specifics...like what version of Warcraft II you have and any specific errors you receive.

Hi nailthatmonkey,
I tried what you have just said, but it doesn't work. I'm trying to play Warcraft II and everything runs until I click on start game and it appears a windows which says please insert the cd in order to play, or something like this, I insert de cd and I click on accept but. it appears the same windows all the times. And I wonder if you could help me please, telling me what could I do. I tried in a Vista PC and in a XP laptop, but problem is the same in both.
What I do is:
I run dosbox and I type:
mount c: c:\warcraft.
c:\
subst p: c:
p:
then if I type cd warcraft II, nothing happens. Therefore I type install, and I install it successfully, then when the setup is finish. in the dosbox you can see:
p:\war2\
and a message above, where says type war2 to play the game. The I do it and the game starts. I see the intro, I see the main menu. However when I want to start a game it says please insert the cd, I instert the cd and accept the window but, it suddenly appears the same windows again and again.
Please I really would like to play with this game, help me please.

Here is a possible problem..... do just what you said but before you do all that open up the CD Drive directory in My Computer. Click Ctrl-A and it will select all the files. Copy all these files into the directory where Warcraft II is installed if it tells you that there are multiple copies of files and then asks you what to do just go ahead and re-write over them....(Copy and Replace)....now do exactly what you did before or try this....
(1) mount c c:\warcraft (or wherever you put the game on your hard drive)
(2) c:
(3) subst p: c: (you can use a letter other than P: as long as it's free on your system)
(4) p:
(5) cd warcraft II

Well you have to first install the game to a directory. "C:\Warcraft" is just a common directory name. It would be better if it were installed in a folder called "C:\WCII" only because DOSbox likes to work with smaller directory names. 8 characters or less. Install the game either by Autoplay on the CD or by accessing the install from withing DOSbox by mounting the CD drive i.e. "mount E: E:\" ("E" being whatever your CD drive label is) and then follow these steps.
1) type E:\
2)type install.exe (or whatever the install program is called, could be setup.exe...just look on the cd for it)
3)follow on screen instructions
4)proceed to previous steps mentioned in previous posts
5)NOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will only have to do these steps if you have the original Warcraft II. DOS version. If you have Warcraft II B.N.E (Battle Net Edition) you can just install it from Autoplay.

nailthatmonkey...
There's another issue that's come up for me in trying to get the game to run. After p: c: etc., when you get to cd warcraft II, DOSBox displays the message "directoryname is longer than 8 characters and/or contains spaces." Is there any other way of going about getting getting the program to recognize that there is, in fact, a cd in the drive?
