So, yeah. My roommate and I custom-built him a computer back in the fall and it's been working great, except every so often "display driver has crashed and successfully recovered" would happen, or games would just freeze, go black for a few seconds, then come back. But I got a call from my other roommate, who was just installing Steam and Left 4 Dead on the system, when he told me this:

"So I was just installing the game, not really doing anything, when the computer's fans suddenly got really loud and the screen went black. The monitor then said that there was no input."

I'm assuming his graphics card just died. Anybody have any other suggestions of what it could be, or a way to test the card to see if it died? I'll be back down there tonight so they'll probably have me take a look at it then.

    System specs:

AMD Phenom II X4 945 @ 3.0GHz (normal, not overclocked)

    6GB PC3-12800 DDR3 RAM

    ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO motherboard

    XFX Radeon 4890 1GB GDDR5 memory

OCZ MOD X-STEAM PRO 600W power supply

    TIA

The only way of testing a graphics card, as far as I know is using it on another computer.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. We don't really have another computer to use, as we all have notebooks.

So here's a fun tidbit: His computer works after a reboot. So the graphics card works, apparently, is there any way to test it to see if it's a dud?

Get him to look at his temps. Might be getting too toasty on the card?

Nope, GPU doesn't break 130-140 degrees Fahrenheit under load. 'tis a mystery...
